South African Airways pilots have threatened to strike over a dispute over salary increases with the national airline.

The pilots are threatening to shorten the airline’s wings and are demanding a 15.7% salary increase with additional benefits. The company is offering only 8.46% and says it cannot afford the proposed offer.

When negotiations began in May, the South African Airways Pilots Association initially submitted a demand for a 30% pay increase. However, the association has since lowered its wage requirement.

SAA management stated that the pilots’ proposed salary offer could negatively impact the company’s regaining operational sustainability, potentially leading to bankruptcy.

The airline was placed under business rescue between 2019 and 2021 and has since been debt-free and financially sustainable, thanks to a profit increase in the current fiscal year – the first in almost a decade.

SAA Group Corporate Affairs Leader Vimla Maistry said: “Following extensive wage negotiations, South African Airways has received a notice from the SAA Pilots Association of possible strike action. SAA’s management team is committed to a fair resolution and is implementing contingency measures to ensure that any disruption to our operations is as minimal as possible for our valued customers, especially during the busy December season.”

The pilots argued that amid the airline’s problems, they faced significant pay cuts, stagnant incomes and deteriorating working conditions.

Both parties declare that they are committed to obtaining a fair and mutually beneficial resolution. Meanwhile, the airline said it was putting contingency plans in place to ensure service disruptions were kept to a minimum.

With dozens of tourists flocking to South Africa in the coming weeks, we can hope they figure this out. Just don’t ask taxpayers for another bailout.
